ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- A 23-year-old St. George man has drowned after the canoe he and two friends were in turned over in the Virgin River.

Police say the three men set out this morning to float about five miles down the Virgin River, from Washington to Bloomington.

The boat hit something hard and overturned. The river isn't considered whitewater, but is fast-moving due to heavy snowmelt and recent rains.

Jonathan Ziegler was pinned against a culvert. The two other men from the canoe escaped and called 911. Ziegler was pronounced dead at the scene.
