SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Division of Air Quality is shifting its focus to winter pollution now that a record-setting summer is over.
The DAQ says Utah had 40 days from June through September when the air quality was rated unhealthy -- 24 more than in 2006.
A heavy wildfire season gets the blame for the high volume, which included 19 "red" days and 21 "yellow" days.
Ozone levels run high in the summer, but were worse in July because the state had a heavy wildfire season.
The DAQ is preparing for a busy winter, when temperature inversions can trap pollution and smog in Utah's mountain valleys.
