Gene Kennedy reporting A hazmat crew was called to a house in South Salt Lake Wednesday morning.
A South Salt Lake resident found some chemicals on the back porch of her home. She called 911, telling the dispatcher she thought her son was mixing the chemicals to make explosives.
South Lake firefighters were called out to the scene, blocking off the street for a time. They determined that there was no reason for concern, as the chemicals were common chemicals that could be found in most hardware stores, nothing illegal.
Later, the 18-year-old son was seen being walked out of the house in handcuffs. At this point, he has not been arrested. Police do want to know what he was doing with the chemicals. The son is apparently a chemistry student who is going into chemical engineering.
The son has told police that he was merely experimenting with the chemicals for some sort of class project.
KSL interviewed the mother, and she gave the impression that the situation was more serious than what the son was claiming.
Police are trying to determine if there was any threat at all.
