WEST VALLEY CITY -- A man was shot and killed by police in West Valley City Thursday afternoon.
The incident has shut down a residential neighborhood near 3600 West and 2800 South, but police are releasing little information on what happened.
Officers say West Valley police officers "encountered an adult male armed with a handgun" just before 4 p.m. in front of a public utilities building. As a result of that encounter, multiple shots were fired and the man was shot and killed.
"At this point, obviously, the investigation is active. The specific details I don't have," said West Valley Police Sgt. Mike Powell. "At some point later on, possibly in the next couple of days, there'll be additional information. But at this point (we have) very limited information due to the fact that it is a very active investigation."
A witness who was in the area at the time said he heard multiple shots, possibly five or six.
Police say more than one officer was involved in the shooting. Those involved have been placed on paid administrative leave as the incident is investigated.
The name of the man who was killed has not been released.
As the investigation continues, police have closed off 3600 West between 3100 South and 2700 South.
