MORGAN — Two people were killed in a high-speed crash in Morgan County Wednesday night.
About 9:30 p.m., a Morgan County sheriff's deputy spotted a Volkswagen Jetta traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on I-84. His radar gun recorded the vehicle going 118 mph, according to a statement from the Utah Highway Patrol.
The deputy pulled out into traffic to follow the vehicle, but quickly lost sight of it because of the high speeds.
After traveling around a corner, however, the deputy discovered the vehicle had struck a rock wall, the guardrail and then rolled, ejecting both occupants.
Andrea Kaiser, 25, of Clinton, and Nathan Imes, 28, of Ogden, were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say neither was wearing a seat belt.
The force of the collision dislodged the vehicle's engine.
As of Thursday afternoon, the UHP said investigators had not been able to determine who was driving at the time of the accident.
Utah state court records show Imes had a history of DUIs and driving on a revoked license.
According to court records, he was charged Nov. 25 in Farmington's 2nd District Court with DUI and driving on a revoked license. On Oct. 6, Imes removed a barricade blocking a closed road, drove to the other end of the street, and removed another barricade, court documents state. Imes was also charged or convicted in 2009, 2008 and 2005 for similar incidents including driving on a denied license, ignition interlock violation and exhibition driving.
Kaiser received misdemeanor traffic citations for an Oct. 6 incident of failing to observe a barricade and having an open container in a vehicle.
