Gene Kennedy reportingEmotions ran high after a former Lehi police officer appeared in court in Provo this morning.

Court Appearance for Ex-Lehi Police Officer Accused in Shooting

Arthur Henderson is accused of chasing his ex-wife along Lehi city streets, eventually shooting her boyfriend. He later turned his gun on his former colleagues, officers with the Lehi Police Department.

Arthur Henderson waived his right to a preliminary hearing. The courtroom was packed with the victim's family and also those supporting the accused shooter.

After the hearing, the suspect's uncle tried to make a statement to explain Henderson's actions, that didn't sit well with one man.

Rydell York, Suspect's Uncle: "I would just like to set the record straight that there are two sides to a story."

Unidentified man: "It makes me sick. Guy should be locked up for life."

Unidentified man: "I've got a seven-year-old, took his innocence away."

Rydell York, Suspect's Uncle: "There are situations where a man can be pushed to his limits. Where he.."

Unidentified man: "I don't care what he did. He did do that. So I've got the innocence of kid that I have to go home and take care of every night. Who's going to give me my son's innocence back?"

Before the outburst the suspect's uncle told Eyewitness News that Arthur Henderson was under extreme personal stress before the shooting. He had lost his job with the Lehi Police Department and his wife had left him.

In January, police say Henderson tried to kill his ex-wife and shot her boyfriend, Craig Trimble. Trimble survived.

Today the judge allowed bail to be set at $250,000. Although that's very high, it upset the victim.

Craig Trimble, Shooting Victim: "I don't want to see him get out because I fear for my life. We have had numerous time where we have had spout-offs, boxing matches. Before I got shot, I had another case against him on an assault. (Reporter question: "You have had incidences with him before?") "Yeah a couple times."

Henderson was an experienced police officer who was on the SWAT team. He's also been described as emotional and volatile. He was calm in court today, but his lawyer says he's depressed and is in solitary confinement a good deal of the time.
