Richard Piatt ReportingGovernor Huntsman is keeping an eye on the immigration debate; he is anxious to see Utah benefit from the changes.
Governor Huntsman is one of a team of US heads of state eager to tackle two issues, most of all in the immigration debate. Those issues include protecting US borders better, and dealing with the 11-million undocumented workers who are already in the United States.
Right now, the state absorbs expenses for health care and education, among other things, from some undocumented immigrants. But they are issues the Federal Government has been ignoring, until now.
Governor Huntsman: "I think both those issues need to be covered in whatever the outcome is. The border and the pathway to citizenship, you can't just wish people away. I think that is unrealistic."
Governor Huntsman made his comments at his monthly KUED news conference today. He also restated support for the state's new driver's privilege card as a legitimate policy tool to deal with the population that is here.
