SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Two Utah mines are being honored for their safety record by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The Vernal Pit and Mill mine in Vernal had the third best safety record in the country among large open pit mines. It had 126,000 employee hours last year without a fatal injury or accident that resulted in lost work days.

The Portable Crusher Unit in Duchesne County had the second best record in the country for small bank mines. It went nearly 10,000 hours without an accident that resulted in a lost work day.
