Amanda Butterfield ReportingBoth St. George and Hurricane City Police Departments could have sex scandals on their hands. So far, two Washington County deputies have resigned.
These are two different cases of reported sexual misconduct, involving two Washington County deputies. They just both happened to resign at the same time.
This is the kind of investigation Sgt. Craig Harding is handling carefully.
Sgt. Craig Harding: "We're not going to speculate what it was."
A uniformed colleague, a Washington County deputy, accused of sexual misconduct in St. George.
Sgt. Craig Harding/St. George Police: "We have yet to determine what conduct that is. We have yet to determine how many suspects or witnesses we have."
And that's all he's saying.
Sgt. Craig Harding/St. George Police: "I don't want to state this or that, in event it turned out not to be true."
In a separate but similar investigation in Hurricane, we know a little bit more, that a deputy is accused of sexual misconduct that happened here.
Shayne Copeland/Hurricane Police: "It was alleged to us that a female inmate in the Washington County jail and a correctional officer had some kind of conduct."
If it happened, that's a felony, and that's what Copeland is trying to figure out.
Shayne Copeland/Hurricane Police: "We're just starting the investigation now, opening it up, interviewing everyone that we think might have some knowledge on it."
Though both cases happened in Washington County, if charges are filed, neither will be prosecuted there.
We could learn names and more details about the St. George case by tomorrow.
