SALT LAKE CITY -- Defrosting the turkey, mashing the potatoes, rolling the dough for homemade rolls and then cleaning up after it is all gone. A Thanksgiving meal is no easy feast.
Some people avoid the hassle all together and head out for dinner instead. The Grand America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City sees about 2000 of these people each Thanksgiving, trading in grandma's antique server and sterling ware for buffet lines.
The hotel serves up the traditional bird and stuffing on Thanksgiving alongside crab legs and shrimp, crepes, omelets and waffles.
"I already had waffles, an omelet, some prime rib, there is a lot of options," said David Pendleton, of Draper.
For some of those patrons, the dinner at The Grand America has become their Thanksgiving tradition. Other restaurants welcome those looking for another option and keep their doors open for the occasion. Across the street, Little America is open, as well as Mimi's Café and Marie Callendars.
"Come down and join us for Thanksgiving. Letting mom have the day off is such a wonderful thing," said Bruce Fery, of the Grand America Hotel.
