Sam Penrod ReportingA gruesome discovery was made this morning in Orem inside a storage shed. Two men were found dead.
The two men, both in their early twenties and from Utah County are believed to have died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Police say the men ran a truck inside of the closed storage unit. It's believed to be an accident.
Police say there is evidence the two men were using drugs inside of the truck and likely had it running to keep warm. But with the door down on the storage unit, there was no ventilation and the exhaust was fatal.
A family member of one of the victims owns the storage units and found the truck inside a unit this morning. One of the men who died apparently took the truck from his father without permission on Friday.
Inside the truck, the two men were found dead, along with evidence of illegal drugs. Investigators believe the men likely died late Friday night or early Saturday morning. The truck was not running when it was found, but the keys were still in the ignition, the windows were up and the heater was on.
Police plan to rule the deaths as accidental, because they have no evidence the men were trying to take their own lives.
Lt. Phil Murphy, Orem Police Dept.: "The mindset of the individuals will be tough to establish, unless we can have some indications if this was an unintentional situation where they were sitting inside and had no intent to do this, it would be very sad."
Investigators will rely on autopsy and toxicology reports, to make a final determination as to the cause of death, but it is believed to be carbon monoxide and not from overdosing. Those results are not expected for several weeks.
One of the victims has been identified as 22-year old Kristopher Fairbanks of Springville. The other victim's identity has not been released, other than he was in his early twenties and from Utah County.
