LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) -- At least six people were killed Sunday in a traffic accident involving at least 20 vehicles in blizzard conditions on Interstate 80 west of Laramie, the Wyoming Highway Patrol reports.
The accident occurred about 9 miles east of Elk Mountain, in Carbon County, and was first reported shortly after 4 P-M.
An undetermined number of injured people have been transported to hospitals in Laramie and Rawlins, the highway patrol stated.
Troopers at the scene at about 6 P-M reported that strong winds and snow had reduced visibility to nearly zero. The interstate will remain closed until it is safe to open, according to a release from the highway patrol.
The interstate was closed from Cheyenne to Laramie at the request of Laramie officials. There was no parking left in Laramie for semitrailers.
Local Laramie residents are being allowed to travel west beyond the road-closure gates at Cheyenne if they can prove to law enforcement that they live in Laramie or are students at the University of Wyoming. The highway is reported to be clear and dry between Cheyenne and Laramie.
