(KSL News) -- Tens of thousands of Latter-day Saint Young Women ages 12 to 18 attended a special meeting downtown tonight.

The General Young Women Meeting takes place every spring at the end of March and is broadcast by satellite to meetinghouses of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout the world for millions of girls.

Their leaders told the young women they live in amazing times but their first responsibility is at home.

Sister Susan Tanner, General Young Women's President: "We must be the light to help our families overcome sin, anger, envy, and fighting. We can pray together, weep for each other, heal each other's wounds, and selflessly love and serve one another."

President Gordon B. Hinckley was in attendance this evening. He did not speak, but one of his counselors did. President James E. Faust told the girls they are young women of promise and that they had a great work to do in their homes, their church and their communities.

The LDS Church's General Conference takes place next Saturday and Sunday. Four sessions will be broadcast here on KSL Channel 5.
