SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah lawmakers are returning after a two-week hiatus to finalize new congressional boundaries.

Legislators will reconvene a special session Monday after Republicans in the House and Senate failed to find a compromise map earlier this month.

Republican House Speaker Becky Lockhart of Provo says she is optimistic the Legislature will pass a congressional map by the end of the day.

The Senate has already passed a map that divides Democratic-leaning Salt Lake County into three districts. The map stalled in the House after Republicans refused to support it following hours of closed door meetings.

Democrats oppose the map passed by the Senate because they claim it dilutes the votes of their supporters.

Activist groups also plan a rally for Monday evening to protest the dividing of Salt Lake County.
