This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports the average middle-income family may spend over $225,000 to raise a child born in 2010 to the age of 18. That's why businesses like Once Upon a Child are so valuable.

Once Upon a Child in Layton is part of a bigger operation that represents the largest children's re-saler in the nation with over 240 stores. In meeting with owner Lyn Montgomery, she shared with me that this business venture was a decision she made with her husband, Jim, to support the community. They attract a high-end of clothing and toys in excellent condition from 0 to size 18 for girls and size 0 to 20 for boys.

Lyn feels a strong obligation to support this business model with carefully-selected brands so that the person selling the item gets a good price. This also works out for the buyer who has an opportunity to select some wonderful new clothing from a great selection. The parent company has been a solid support for the Montgomerys, and they're thankful for the value they receive from helping people.

This is a big word of mouth business, and the secret needs to get out. It's not unusual for Once Upon a Child to spend up to $700 a day buying the top-end clothing to re-sell. They buy all seasons of clothing at any time of the year and pay cash on the spot. No appointment is necessary.

When you think about how fast kids grow, this model makes sense for everybody. Communities need re-sell options, especially in challenging times. It makes a big difference to get some of your retail investment back when possible. Once Upon a Child gets thank yous all the time from happy customers.

The business already has seven dedicated employees on board supporting the Utah job creation climate. The owners give back to the community and work closely with the ladies' group at Hill Air Force Base. They also donate items to Deseret Industries.
