FARMINGTON — A Farmington Junior High School band has reached its goal of raising $40,000 and will be able to attend a prestigious music convocation — the Midwest Clinic in Chicago in December.
The school's symphonic band received a boost from a donation earlier this week that put them over their goal. Local groups and private donors, including a $5,000 donation from the Music Opportunity Network, a Utah-based charity, helped to make the band's dreams a reality..
Heath Wolf, the director of bands at the school, said being invited to the clinic is an honor and the 69-student band will be significantly influenced by the opportunity.
"There is no higher honor to be earned by a school ensemble," he said. "The discipline, dedication, work ethic and selflessness that are required to be successful will stay with them for the remainder of their lives. This is the real value of this experience and music education in general."
Wolf said the band is grateful to the community for helping them reach their lofty fundraising goal, and the students want all donors to know how appreciative they are.
The Midwest Clinic was established in 1946 to advance the standard of music education and improve music methods and teaching techniques, according to a press release. About 16,000 people attend the conference annually. Four other Utah schools have been selected in the past: Mountain Ridge Junior High, Timpview High, Davis High and the Crescent Super Band from Utah County.
