MURRAY — Police were looking Friday for two men who allegedly broke into a couple's apartment and took a bag full of money at gunpoint.

Murray police detective Jeff Maglish said the bag, which had a zipper on top and resembled what a business might use for night deposits, contained a "substantial" amount of money.

Between 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. two armed men broke through the locked door of an apartment, near 800 East and 5600 South, and specifically demanded the 20-year-old man and 19-year-old woman inside hand over their bag of money, Maglish said.

The gunmen threatened the victims, telling them they'd be watching after they left and would harm them if they called police. About 4 a.m., the couple was able to muster enough courage to call authorities, he said.

Anyone with information on the robbery can call police at 801-840-4000.

Maglish did not know why the couple had so much money lying around their home in a bag. But he said as of Friday, it appeared the money was not collected through illegal means.

The father of one of the victims said the couple was just saving up to buy a car, and had been for some time. The couple are college students and were going to buy the car soon. The father himself had just given them $2,500. He said the robbers got away with more than $11,000.

"We don't believe in any way there was illegal activity going on throughout the house," Maglish said.

The couple had just recently moved into the apartment. Detectives were looking Friday at all the people who helped the couple move to determine if any of them knew about the bag of money, Maglish said.

Both of the alleged robbers wore bandanas over their faces and carried handguns. At one point during the robbery, the bandana of one of the men fell off, but the couple said they did not recognize him.

The couple was only able to give police limited descriptions of the robbers. One man was described as a large black man, about 6 feet 5 inches, 300 pounds, and the other a white man with a thin build.
