"What's Your Number" tries really hard to be a cute little date night movie, but when a plot line is based on, well, so many elements that are base, it's a tough sell.
Anna Ferris as Ally Darling once again delivers her tried, true and tired character who is predictably clueless, sweet and sexually charged. Ally has just been dumped by her boyfriend, fired by her creepy boss and faces going to her younger sister's wedding alone.
Things get worse when a magazine article informs her that if you've slept with more than 20 partners prior to marriage your odds of eventually having a happy marriage or getting married at all diminishes significantly. Of course the "20 rule" does not apply to guys. Deeply concerned, she starts the list to determine her number. To her dismay, she's at the limit. What to do?
The answer is to recycle the old acquaintances so she won't tilt the game of love. But how do you ferret out these lovers of the past? This is where her neighbor, Colin (Chris Evans) enters the picture. Colin entertains a never-ending parade of women but has trouble ridding himself of the pesky females in the morning.
So, what's my number? For this movie only 2 and that's probably generous.
Ally agrees to give him sanctuary and cover when he needs to escape from awkward situations in exchange for help in tracking down her exes. Anybody out there not see where this is going? Is it possible that they might fall in love? Oh, the anticipation!
There are some entertaining scenes, especially those surrounding the delicacy of putting together her sister's wedding while trying to maneuver around feuding, divorced parents (Blythe Danner and Ed Begley Jr.) Sadly, these gifted actors are under- and misused, with Danner's character reduced to a cliché.
At times there's a charm and chemistry between Ferris and Evans. But it is doused with a less-than-sparkling storyline, some disgusting human foibles that are meant to be humorous, coarse language and, of course the sexuality.
So, what's my number? For this movie only 2 and that's probably generous. "What's Your Number?" is rated R.
