SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City and Roosevelt police departments have received federal grants to hire new officers.

The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services awarded Salt Lake police nearly $1.1 million for five officers and Roosevelt police $210,875 for one officer. The grants were among $243 million DOJ provided to 238 police agencies nationwide.

The competitive COPS grant program provides funding to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to hire officers dedicated to specific crime challenges facing communities. The money covers entry-level salaries and benefits of newly-hired, or rehired, full-time officers over a three-year period.
