PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Hundreds of Utah Community Credit Union members received e-mails yesterday as part of a scam to steal credit card numbers.
Brigham Young University employees were among the targeted. They say they received two e-mails that appeared to be from the credit union. The messages claimed to be reminders that unusual activity had been seen in their accounts. The e-mails then urged them to click on a link and confirm their account and credit card numbers.
The e-mail said the process was mandatory and if it wasn't completed, their account may be suspended or closed.
Authorities say this type of scam is called "phishing," and it's becoming a growing problem.
This month, Utah lawmakers passed a bill making phishing a second-degree felony.
Yesterday's attack was the first on U-C-C-U.
