Sam Penrod ReportingA Holladay apartment complex is in lockdown tonight; a woman was shot and killed there. The gunman is still barricaded inside, and authorities say it's possible he's shot himself.
Police have still not been able to make contact with the gunman. This is happening at the Cottonwood Apartments on 4700 South and 900 East. Police have surrounded the area, after a woman was shot and killed outside of one of the buildings around 7:15 tonight.
Sgt. Paul Jaroscak, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "They attempted a rescue of her, quickly determined by medical personnel that she was dead. We also have a person that we believe may have been involved, ran back into the apartment, carrying a gun, a rifle. And we heard one shot at that point."
Sheriff's deputies arrived to the scene and set up a large perimeter, because the gunman is believed to be armed with a rifle. This is a large apartment complex and, as a precaution, those already home are being asked to stay inside. Police are not letting any other residents go home.
That is leaving those people very anxious, wanting to make sure everything is okay at home.
Pia Gonzalez, Resident: "My friend heard the shots and she called me. Then she asked if I was okay, and that's about it. But she said it was right by my apartment."
Jamie Jeppson, Resident: "I'm nervous 'cuz my son and my husband are in there. I don't know if it's the fact that someone's been shot there. Nothing's ever happened here. I"ve lived here for a year and nothin' has ever happened."
The SWAT team is in position right now, as detectives work on getting a search warrant so they can go inside the apartment where the gunman is believed to be.
It is not clear how the victim and gunman are connected to this and what may have led to the shooting.
Again authorities taking their time tonight, trying to resolve this safely for everyone involved.
