Alex Cabrero ReportingDet. Kevin Joiner, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "The gentleman believes that he did strike the vehicle. We don't have a vehicle at this point. We don't have a victim at this point either."
A man fast asleep in his house heard someone breaking in, so he got out his gun. Police say he took one shot at the men as they were leaving in their pick-up truck.
It happened on 8th South and 2nd East in downtown Salt Lake this afternoon. Police are still looking for the two suspects and their pickup truck and investigators are still speaking with the homeowner.
Police don't believe anyone was hit, but the homeowner does believe he hit their truck as they were leaving. Sleeping inside his house, the homeowner heard someone trying to get in a window. He grabbed his gun. The intruders must have seen him, because they took off.
When the homeowner got outside, he shot once. A construction worker next door witnessed the scene.
Construction Worker: "They came running back, well the one guy came running back, and the homeowner was chasing after them with his gun, and tried to stop them from taking off."
Now, the homeowner could face charges.
Det. Kevin Joiner, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "You have the right to protect yourself. You do not have the right to use deadly force in defense of property. If you feel like your life is in danger, you are certainly within your rights to protect yourself."
The district attorney will have to decide what the situation here was.
Again, police are still looking for the two suspects. They are not sure if robbery was the motive in this case.
