SANDY — A 27-year-old woman was killed in a crash involving two vehicles Friday morning.

Lyndsey Jacobsen was driving a Honda Civic as she waited to turn left at 9620 S. State around 10:30 a.m. when Sandy Police Capt. Kevin Thacker said she turned into the path of an oncoming SUV and was struck — sending the car several hundred feet off the road into a nearby field.

He said the light was green for the SUV and it is unclear why the driver turned in front of oncoming traffic when she did.

Jacobsen, who was not wearing a seat belt, died instantly. Meanwhile the driver of the SUV, a male in his 50s, suffered minor injuries.

PRICE — Two people are dead, and several others injured, after an accident on one of Utah's deadliest roads.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers say a Chevy Cavalier was traveling west on state Route 6 Friday afternoon when it drifted off the roadway. The driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to cross the center line into the path of an eastbound semi truck.

The truck hit the Cavalier and split it in two. It was then hit a second time by a Hyundai Santa Fe.

Sandy residents Sharlene L. Atkinson, 64, and Lynnette C. Hulse, 63 — both passengers in the Santa Fe — were killed in the accident. The other two people in their vehicle — driver Steven Dee Hulse, 64, and passenger William G. Atkinson Jr, 65 — sustained critical injuries.

The driver of the Cavalier, 47-year-old Darrin Hawkinson, was also critically injured.

James M. Melvin, the driver of the semi truck, was not injured.

ST. GEORGE — A vehicle rolled into the Virgin River Gorge Friday, ejecting at least three passengers.

Medical helicopters have been dispatched to the scene, near mile marker 22 on I-15.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.
