Gene Kennedy Reporting A home in downtown Salt Lake City was more than just a place to live. It was home to a marijuana cultivation project.
Police say basically the house had a garden full of pot plants. They found 20 of them.
Sgt. Ryan Atack/Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "The individual had been growing marijuana here for a year, for personal use and possibly distribution. We're still investigating that angle."
Just before midnight, narcotics officers served their search warrant at 1177 S. 400 East and found plants in various stages of growth. Police say that way, the couple living there had a revolving supply.
Arrested overnight were Shawn Nay and his wife Shandra, and two of their friends-- Kelly Drummond and Daniel Osborne. Police say the two friends were smoking weed when officers walked in.
It's possible the suspects were growing simply for personal use and to supply their friends, but police say it was an elaborate operation.
Sgt. Ryan Atack, SLC PD: "He knew what he was doing, with lights, irrigation, 20 plants that he was growing. He was definitely making product."
The couple accused of growing the drugs also has a two-year-old child. He's been removed from the home and the suspects have been charged with child endangerment. The two friends caught smoking have also been charged with child endangerment. Even though it's not their home or their child, merely exposing that toddler to second-hand marijuana smoke is a felony.
