(KSL News) -- A 6-year-old hit by a car on her way to school is in extremely critical condition. She was hit by a teenager driving a mini-van in Kearns.
The 16-year-old driver told officers the girl darted into the road near 5975 W. Torrington Court.
The girl was unconscious, with severe head injuries when she was flown to the hospital. Deputies say the girl has since been stabilized, but remains in extremely critical condition.
Police believe other children may have seen the accident.
Randy Thomas, Salt Lake County Sheriff: "We don't have any eyewitnesses at this time. But there was some indication there were some other children present. We're not certain if they got scared and ran off. We're talking to some school officials now to try to get some witnesses."
At this point, investigators do not believe speed was a factor.
