Gene Kennedy Reporting A driver slams into a semi. His car is dragged hundreds of feet. His wife hears the whole thing through his cell phone.
Shane Larson/Witness: "I thought, 'Holy cow!' I thought this guy was scared getting dragged. She heard the whole thing."
The horrific crash took place on I-215. The victim was dragged underneath a semi. He's in serious condition at the University of Utah hospital, but witnesses are stunned he's doing that well.
The victim was driving westbound on I-215 last night. Highway patrol believes he realized he was getting off on the wrong exit, and tried to get back onto the freeway when he lost control of his car. It slid underneath a semi and was dragged nearly 400 feet.
Right after it happened, several witnesses jumped out of their cars to help the man, including Shane Larsen.
Shane Larsen/Witness: "Myself and an off-duty Murray officer. I could not believe that he wasn't decapitated or dead. He was actually in really good shape."
Shane Larsen/Witness: "As I was talking to him, I kept looking back, seeing the skid marks where he had got dragged, and I thought, 'Boy, if this was me then I'd really be shaken up.' He was alert the whole time getting pulled under the semi."
In fact, the victim was on his cell phone talking to his wife when it happened! She heard the whole thing, dragging and all.
Police say the truck driver did a great job keeping his rig upright. Had it tipped over, the car's driver most likely would've been killed.
As it was, the car was literally crunched around the victim, so emergency crews had to extricate him from the vehicle. He was then flown to U of U where he begins his recovery.
