(KSL News/AP) -- Authorities have identified an Oregon prison parolee killed in a shootout with police following a chase in eastern Utah.
Tony Shane Francis, 42, was allegedly driving a stolen S-U-V when he was pulled over by a Duchesne County sheriff's deputy on Tuesday, according to the Utah Department of Safety.
They say Tony Shane Francis was a drifter, but has ties to Oregon and Washington State.
Francis stopped in a vehicle for gas in Duchesne. An officer checked his out-of-state plate and it turned out to be stolen. The officer pulled him over a few blocks away.
He then sped away, out of town, up Indian Canyon. Several law enforcement vehicles pursued as he headed up the Tavaputs Plateau into the snow. Near the summit, he spun out and a vicious gun battle erupted.
Sheriff Merv Gustin, Duchesne County Sheriff's Office: "We're pretty fortunate that we got to come home and the bad guy didn't."
Francis was shot dead.
Five of the six officers who responded are on administrative leave while it's being investigated.
