OREM -- It has been one year, since Utah Valley University student Clint Applegate was hit by a car and was in a coma for weeks, the hospital for months and is still recovering. Monday he helped open a brand new crosswalk, near the spot the accident occurred.
The crosswalks are known as HAWKS, High intensity Activated Crosswalk signals. They trigger a red light, so a pedestrian can safely cross a busy street not far from an area where Applegate almost lost his life. The past year has been a long and difficult road for Clint Applegate.
Orem City and UVU teamed up to install the new safety equipment at four crosswalks around the campus. Clint flipped the switch to activate the crossing. While Clint continues to make dramatic improvement from his injuries, he hopes drivers will pay more attention and help protect pedestrians of all ages.
"Slowdown, keep your eyes open and watch. Something could happen in a split second and change your life forever," said Applegate.
While classes are still a week away at UVU, most local elementary and junior high and high schools are now underway. That is why police throughout the state are cautioning drivers to slow down and watch closely for children, especially near school zones.
