MIDVALE — A woman who witnesses say stepped in front of an oncoming TRAX train was killed Wednesday.
Police have identified the victim as 46-year-old Kimberly K. Merrill of Sandy.
About 12:40 p.m., Merrill was walking parallel with the tracks on 7200 South near 200 West near a TRAX platform. A train was approaching the platform going between 30 and 40 mph and the crossing arms to stop vehicle traffic were down and lights were flashing, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.
"Based on witness information, she was looking back in the direction of the train" and then stepped in front of it just as the train approached, he said.
Detectives were investigating Wednesday whether Merrill tripped or fell, or stepped in front of the train on purpose.
The TRAX conductor was placed on standard paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
