Samantha Hayes Reporting More than half way into the games and the 2006 Winter Olympics haven't necessarily gone the way Team USA had hoped. Last night was no different.
After three of four men's aerialists failed to qualify for the final, neither American woman made it. Struggles with their landings kept Emily Cook and Jana Lindsey from moving on.
The night improved from there, but not to the degree expected by America's male speed skaters. Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick went second and third in the 1500 meter, but believe a media-made distraction got in the way of gold.
2002 gold medalist and Utah favorite Derek Parra finished his career back in the pack. He finished 19th in the 1500 meter.
A big night for a hometown girl in the women's bobsled. Shut out of the Salt Lake games, Shauna Rohbock changes from pusher to slider in the women's bobsled, and takes home silver.
And, in arguably the highest profiled event, all three American figure skaters find themselves near the top after the women's short program. Emily Hughes in seventh, Kimmie Meissner in fifth, and Sasha Cohen in first-- three-hundredths of a point ahead of Russian favorite Irina Slutskaya.
The women's free skate is Thursday.
Back to the speed skating feud-- Davis did reveal he was upset Hedrick didn't shake his hand after he won gold in the 1000 meter. Hedrick said he felt betrayed Davis dropped out of the team pursuit, which the Americans eventually lost in the quarterfinal.
