Keith McCord ReportingAt the Salt Lake games four years ago, there were some tense moments on Park City's Main Street during the afternoon. Bomb threats and police robots were part of the Olympic experience.
Main Street was usually packed with people all hours of the day and night. But, on Day 12 of the 2002 games, two suspicious packages were found. So police cleared the street and brought in a robot to investigate and detonate them. They weren't bombs, just a couple of lunch boxes that someone had dropped into a trash can.
Summer Olympian Rulon Gardner was still in a hospital, recovering from frostbite after getting stranded while snowmobiling four days earlier. Doctors were optimistic about his recovery.
On this day, we learned about this group of students from a tiny town in Montana who decided five years ago, they wanted to attend the games, which fell during their senior year! They raised thousands of dollars for the trip and the grandparents of one of the kids put them all up in their home in South Jordan.
They'll certainly be able to reminisce about the games at future high school reunions.
