Tooele County To Offer Drug Discount Card

Alex Cabrero reporting With the cost of prescription drugs these days, lots of people could use a big break.

In Tooele County, health officials are planning to give just that with a drug discount card. It's free for Tooele County residents.

For 22 years David Bickmore has been providing prescription drugs to Tooele residents. In the past few years he's noticed a big change.

David Bickmore, Dave's Drugs: "When I first started, the average prescription was 11 or 12 dollars. Now, it's just crossing over 60."

Ask anyone who doesn't have good health insurance...

David Bickmore, Dave's Drugs: "It's really expensive."

The cost of prescription drugs, is the biggest complaint.

David Bickmore, Dave's Drugs: "We've had them go out for 4000 dollars every week. We have several prescriptions break a thousand."

But Tooele County has plan for its residents.

Alana Brunson, Tooele Resident "It's really interesting for me."

Anyone can get a drug discount card, and save big.

Alana Brunson, Tooele Resident: "Save a lot of money we can spend on things we need, like groceries."

Myron Bateman, Tooele Health Dept.: "This allows them to save about 20-percent on most prescriptions."

Because Tooele County is a member of the National Association of Counties, it can join a drug discount card program. Tooele County has become only the second county in the state to do so.

Myron Bateman, Tooele Health Dept.: "Up in Davis county, they just started their program, and over the last 3 months, they've saved about 64-thousand dollars, their citizens in using the card."

Dave's drugs will accept the card. Anytime you can save people money, why not?

David Bickmore, Dave's Drugs: "Society working together on this problem is a really positive thing."

County officials hope to get the card program going sometime in May.
