WEST HAVEN — Railroad workers spotted the dead body of a man near a rail spur just west of Ogden around 4 p.m. Thursday.
The white male in his 50s was found a few yards from the track down a slight incline near the Weber County garbage transfer station, said Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Doug Coleman.
"There was no visible sign of foul play or cause of death," Coleman said. The man may have been dead for a couple of days; he had no ID, and no possessions except for a dead cell phone, he said.
An autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death, and police will try to identify the man by matching his tattoos with database records and jail booking photos.
Investigators believe that there have been transient camps in that area in the last few months, but none are there now. Police received reports of a suspicious individual nearby in the last few days, he added. Officers had searched the area in response to the reports, but did not find anyone.
The man had not been hit or run over by any trains. The body was found between about two blocks south of 24th Street in Ogden and 21st Street in West Haven at about 1100 West. Investigators are charging the cell phone to see if that yields any information, but the phone may not have belonged to the man, Coleman noted.
