Gene Kennedy ReportingAn accused bank robber is learning about the power of surveillance video. High-tech pictures led to his capture around 2:30 Tuesday morning.
What made this a success was a combination of crystal clear surveillance video, tips from the public and aggressive police surveillance.
Lt. Chris Bertram, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "I can tell you we got a tremendous number of people who saw the pictures in the media and that called and were able to identify an individual who they believed it was. And based on that surveillance was undertaken."
The sheriff's department picked up the suspect at a gas station at 2495 S. Redwood Road, after having him under surveillance for more than two hours. Investigators were hot on his trail not even 24 hours after this crime was committed.
The man arrested is 19-year-old Charlie Lewis Sanford. Investigators say yesterday around noon, the man robbed a Key Bank in Salt Lake City. He didn't get away with any money. As he was running away a dye pack in the cash bag exploded. He dropped the money. But before he left the bank, the surveillance cameras were rolling, snapping amazingly clear digital pictures.
Lt. Chris Bertram / Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "I can tell you we got a tremendous number of people who saw the pictures in the media. We did locate that individual tonight."
Sheriff's deputies also found a loaded handgun in the suspect's vehicle. Investigators say Sanford was armed during the crime.
Lt. Chris Bertram, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "The firearm was in proximity of where he was sitting in the car the vehicle. It appears it was loaded."
Also, a second suspect was arrested at a gas station. He is Pago Brown, 26, but he was picked up on unrelated warrants. The sheriff's department does not believe he had any involvement in the robbery.
