AM 820's Dr. Liz Hale ReportingAround the world, millions are celebrating Valentine's Day with flowers, chocolates, dinners and cards. But for many who do not have a significant other or are under pressure to live up to the holiday, it can highlight feelings that are more bitter than sweet.

If, out of the 180 million Valentine's Day cards and 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, not one will be for you, know that you're not alone. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 80 million people will spend this holiday as a single.

On Valentines Day, it is a heart-shaped world for those in love.

"Fortunately, I've found the right one for me and I'm pretty lucky"

But for singles or couples who are feeling unlucky or unhappy this holiday, Cupid's arrow can be a sore subject.

"I'm not a big fan of Valentines Day. If I was with someone it would be all right"

"A lot of my friends we get together and wear black. It's called sad, single awareness day."

The day of romance, like other holidays, can trigger feelings of loneliness and failure, whether you are single or in a relationship.

"Valentines this year is a big non-event. I'm no longer with my girlfriend so I guess I'll be going on the cruise alone."

To take the pressure off instead of buying into the hype of the holiday, use the day to reach out to family and friends, or pamper yourself.

Here are few more ideas:

  • Be a substitute Valentine for someone who is going through a tough time; perhaps they've just lost a loved one. (You still have time to grab a candy, flowers, or candy and head on over to their house!)
  • Offer to baby-sit the kids of one of your favorite families while the parents go celebrate their union.
  • Grab some take-out and a few lonely friends (have a pink elephant gift exchange; it would do everyone's heart some good!)
  • And finally, never underestimate the power of gratitude. Focus on what has gone well this past week, month, or year. Count your blessings versus band aids.
