AMERICAN FORK -- The I-15 Core Project in Utah County, is nearly 50 percent completion. But to get the project done on time and to keep traffic flowing during the work, drivers will see a new lane configuration in American Fork over the next three months.
The southbound lanes will split just before the American Fork Main Street exit and then the lanes will rejoin, as drivers approach the Pleasant Grove interchange. "What this does is it allows us to keep four lanes of traffic open at all times," said UDOT spokesman, Scott Thompson.
"We don't have to shut down any lanes to put down the new pavement."
It's a solution to keep the same number of lanes open, while allowing construction to continue.
"We've got crews working in the middle of traffic, we want to make sure there is protection for our workers so we will have concrete barriers separating traffic." adds Thompson.
If drivers want to exit at either American Fork interchange, they will have to be in the right two lanes, before the freeway split.
A split for northbound lanes, also in American Fork, is set for early August and later this year, a similar configuration will be in place in Orem. All in an effort to get the project finished in December of 2012.
