Friday night, Torino's coming out party was an epic, Olympic gold medal performance.
It didn't take long for the red, white, and blue to stride into gold. Chad Hedrick's drive for five got off to a great start.
Day two, it was gold two. Shaun White, the whirling dervish of the Great White Way, dominates the men's half-pipe in Bardenneccia.
But with all Olympics, there's pain and heartbreak. In her third Olympics, Michelle Kwan's quest for that elusive gold, like Karl Malone's road to the championship ring, falls on hard times. Kwan was forced to withdraw with a groin injury. Emily Hughes replaces Michelle Kwan on Team USA.
At the Olympic short track speed skating venue, it was 'Oh no, Apolo Ohno!' Defending the gold he won on a disqualification in 2002, Apolo stumbled during the semifinal heat and didn't qualify for the 1500 meter finals. But he still has three other events to chase gold.
Finally, how about "Believe-in Steven Nyman?" He learned to ski at Sundance, grew up in Orem. On his 24th birthday, Nyman finished a very respectable 19th on his first Olympic downhill events.
