SALT LAKE CITY — A two-alarm duplex fire in Salt Lake City's Glendale neighborhood caused about $100,000 in damage to the unit and two vehicles Tuesday.
The fire began about 2 p.m. in the garage of the duplex's front unit at 1449 S. 1000 West, said Salt Lake Fire Capt. Mark Bednarik. The family occupying the front half of the duplex, where the fire began in the garage, had already gotten out before firefighters arrived.
About 50 firefighters responded and were able to extinguish the fire within 20 minutes. No one was injured.
"All in all it was just a very aggressive attack," Bednarik said. "They were able to get at it very quickly."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Firefighters cut a hole in the roof to extinguish the fire in the attic and to cool it down, Bednarik said.
The occupants of the affected apartment said they heard something from the garage, saw smoke and quickly got out. A car in the garage was completely destroyed and one parked nearby had some scorch damage.
The American Red Cross is arranging temporary housing for the family in the affected unit.
