SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah's largest cities could create their own school districts under a measure that cleared a House committee today.
The bill is sponsored by Representative David Cox of Lehi. It's intended to create smaller districts with increased parental involvement and administrative accountability.
Only cities with 30-thousand residents or more would be eligible to create their own districts. Under the proposal, a majority vote in a city council would allow for the creation of a new district within those limits.
Educational leaders had expressed concerns that splitting districts would duplicate bureaucracy and create economically disadvantaged districts.
The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
