NEOLA, Duchesne County — A 4-year-old boy died Wednesday after he was run over by a family friend in what Utah Highway Patrol troopers are calling a "tragic accident."
A woman was walking near 9180 North and 2160 West in Neola about 3 p.m., according to troopers. A 71-year-old man drove up beside her in his 2006 Dodge pickup truck and stopped to talk with her through his driver's side window.
When the man let off the brake to drive away, he didn't realize that 4-year-old Kole Jackson Mair had ridden his bike in front of the pickup truck, troopers said.
The man was driving less than 1 mph when he struck the boy, according to UHP Cpl. Rex Olsen. Still, the boy was run over and sustained fatal injuries.
The case will be reviewed by the Duchesne County Attorney's Office, Olsen said.
