SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Senate committee gave its support today to a measure that would require Utahns to prove they're U-S citizens before they can vote.
The bill stems from a recent audit that shows 14 undocumented immigrants with fake IDs voted in the 2004 election.
Senator Mark Madsen of Lehi is sponsoring the bill. His proposal would require residents to show three forms of identification to prove citizenship before they could register to vote.
Madsen says his measure would help preserve the integrity of Utah's voting system. While, opponents say it will make the process more difficult, which would keep people from voting.
The bill will now go to the full Senate for debate.
