WEST JORDAN — West Jordan Police Chief Ken McGuire announced his retirement Friday after 33 years of service in the department.
West Jordan Police Sgt. Drew Sanders described McGuire as an exceptional leader who will be missed by the department.
"He's the only chief that I've worked for, and we love him as an organization," Sanders said.
He's been an icon of our department for many, many years. We already miss him.

McGuire started his law enforcement career in Murray in 1971, according to the department. He served as West Jordan director of public safety from 1989 to 1999, when he was named police chief.
"He's been an icon of our department for many, many years," Sanders said. "We already miss him."
McGuire said he finds the service aspect of law enforcement to be the most rewarding.
“The Community Oriented Policing philosophy is a proactive, problem-solving approach that puts our officers in touch with the community,” McGuire said. “That’s where we can make the most difference.”
During his time with the department, he implemented a Community Service Officer program in 2005, in which civilian employees assist officers in tasks that don’t require sworn police officers. He was also named Chief of the Year in 2011 by the Utah Chiefs of Police Association.
West Jordan Fire Chief Marc McElreath will serve temporarily as head of public safety for fire and police until a permanent replacement can be selected, Sanders said.
