KEARNS — As a Kearns woman worked out at her local gym Wednesday, someone else was stealing her belongings.

"I was hurrying to water aerobics. I was running a little bit later than expected," Marsh Cross said.

It's a class she never misses at the Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center. She rushed to the changing room and stuffed her gym bag in a locker.

"I have my keys and the little scanner card, and it's hooked to my bag," Cross said.

As she worked out, Cross had no idea someone had stolen her stuff. An employee alerted her after getting a call from a man saying he had found her keys.

"So I hurried outside, and my car was there and the door was unlocked," Cross said. "I opened the trunk and my purse was gone."

She says the center's surveillance video shows the thief going in and out of the place. The video also shows the woman in the parking lot behind the wheel of a gold Dodge Durango. The camera captured a female passenger taking Cross' purse out of her trunk.

Investigators at the Unified Police Department are reviewing the video.

"You think people are honest, but they're not." Cross said. "(It's) sad that people have to resort to those methods."

Cross cancelled her credit cards, but not before the women went on a $300 shopping spree at a Home Depot in West Valley City.

Cross says she'll never be so trusting again. "Lock everything up, even if you think you're pretty safe."

Cross now needs a new cell phone and driver's license; it will cost her $800 to get her keys replaced. What's worse is it all happened on her birthday. "It was my birthday, and it was not a great present," she said.

Cross is also suspicious about the man who called Wednesday saying he found her keys. She hasn't been able to reach him because his phone has been disconnected.

A manager says there have been thefts at the gym, but not more than any other fitness center. He said there are signs everywhere encouraging people to lock up their belongings.
