Nishi Gupta ReportingPolice chase a man through backyards in Kaysville, after he led them on a high speed chase through city streets. Police called off the search tonight, after looking for the suspect for hours, talking with neighbors, and going door-to-door.

A six-block area was sealed off, in hopes they would find the man hiding in someone's house or yard, but no such luck.

Chase Suspect Eludes Police

Police spent a significant amount of time searching for Blaine Carlson. They first dealt with him this afternoon and kept on him until this evening. For some reason, he's been able to evade police at every turn.

Sgt. Scott Harper/Davis County Sheriff's Office: "The suspect has eluded us."

And it's been going on all day. It began in Centerville, when a police officer ran the car's license plate. It appeared the car didn't have insurance and the registered owner, 29-year-old Blaine Carlson, had an outstanding drug warrant.

Gary Litster/ Centerville Police Dept.: "I attempted to pull him over. As soon as I turned on my lights he gassed it and took off."

He took off alright, police say at speeds reaching 80 miles an hour through city streets. It was too dangerous, police say, to continue, so they called off the chase.

But a little later, a deputy located the car in a Kaysville neighborhood.

Sgt. Scott Harper Davis County Sheriff's Office: "The deputy jumped out and he was able to take one of the passengers into custody, which was female."

Police are treating her as a victim. She told them Carlson wouldn't let her out of the car.

Jason Bowler/ Witness: "Pretty soon I saw a man run from the backyard and through the church parking lot."

But Carlson got away.

Gary Litster/ Centerville Police: "We searched this entire area without any luck."

Jason Bowler/ Witness: "Looked out the window, saw policemen with guns drawn pointing toward a backyard."

John Moody/Witness: "We started directing the police officer on foot. He's over there!"

Police navigated through backyards, jumped over fences, and welcomed help from people with a clear view.

Sgt. Scott Harper Davis County Sheriff's Office: "We have a lot of great neighbors who were up on their roofs shingling, yelling out where he was running to."

K-9 units tracked Carlson's scent to Davis High School. That's where the trail ended.

Now they're asking for the public's help. Police say Carlson is just over 6 feet tall, about 165 pounds with shoulder length blonde hair. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a red shirt, which they say is a little torn from him jumping fences.

Centerville police say Carlson could face charges for evading a police officer and unlawful detention and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police found a meth pipe at the scene that may belong to him.

The woman is at the Davis County Jail. She also had a warrant out for her arrest.
