SALT LAKE CITY -- Last Fri, June 3, the new LDS-themed movie "17 Miracles" opened to only a few theaters in Utah, but by Monday, the local film seemed to be outperforming many national titles.
Per theater, the movie was earning $3,229, compared to only $1,595 for "X-Men: First Class."
"17 Miracles" depicts the trials and tragedies, as well as the successes, of the Willie Handcart company, which left for Utah later in the season than was typical, and suffered immensely, along with the Martin Handcar Company.
The film offers an uplifting take on the story, depicting what director T. C. Christensen described in a press release as a series of "faith promoting miracles."
By June 17, the movie will be on almost 20 screens in Utah, as well as Las Vegas.
Christensen is known for his work on movies like "The Work and the Glory" and "Praise to the Man."
