Sam Penrod ReportingTerrifying moments in a Weber County neighborhood today as a gunman shoots and kills a neighbor, before being shot himself by police. The suspect is in the hospital under guard after being shot twice by deputies. Exactly what the argument between the dead man and the gunman was all about is still a mystery.
The area is still a crime scene, even though it's been nearly six hours since the shots rang out. And it is troubling for neighbors to think that guns were being fired so close to their homes.
It was around 11:30 this morning, when a neighbor says the 49-year old murder victim who lived in the home and another man, identified by police as 45-year old Warren Fellows, were having some kind of an argument outside. That's when Fellows allegedly shot and killed the victim, just outside of his front door.
When Weber County Sheriff's deputies arrived, they confronted the gunman outside, who was armed with both a rifle and handgun. They say he became aggressive and threatening, and that is when one of the deputies shot the suspect twice, hitting him twice.
Lt. Donny Archuleta: "There was one suspect who had two weapons. When the officers arrived they confronted this individual and told him to drop his weapon. He turned towards officers in a threatening manner and the officers fired firing twice and striking the subject twice."
Moments later, officers discovered the murder victim. It has left the neighborhood in shock that something so violent would happen there.
Justin Barrow, Neighbor: "Everyone always says, 'never in my neighborhood.' You never think something like that is going to happen. Sometimes people just lose their head."
Lt. Donny Archuleta, Weber County Sheriff's Office: "Right now they are collecting evidence, bullet casings, other things, because obviously with a fatality and officer involved shooting, we've got to be meticulous. We've got everybody here, it's going to be a slow and methodical process."
Neighbors describe the murder victim as a quiet man who kept to himself. He has apparently lived there for about seven years.
Police are not saying much about the shooting suspect. We do know he is in the hospital in stable condition and now under guard. It is expected murder charges will be filed against him.
There is a junior high school nearby and authorities had it locked down, in fact students who live in the neighborhood were required to call their parents to pick them up.
The deputy who fired is on temporary leave until the investigation is completed.
