SALT LAKE CITY -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' new building dedicated to use by singles in the Washington D.C. area is getting national press attention.
The Time.com newsfeed this week reported on the "23rd Street Chapel" located in Crystal City, Va. Time and The Washington Post focused on what they called pressure for LDS singles who attend there to marry.
But the Deseret News pointed out, "While the LDS Church teaches that marriage is of eternal consequence and should not be postponed, it also teaches that the decision to wed deserves thoughtful, prayerful consideration and should never be made in haste."
The new building serves some 800-single LDS members and opened in May, according to The Church News.
LDS meet with White House staffers
A group of LDS young adults attended a high-level meeting at the White House last month.
About 20 LDS church members attended the meeting with White House staffers from the Office of Public Engagement. Topics included gay rights, how to increase volunteerism, and the relationship between the federal government and the LDS Church.
One participant, Kristine Haglund of Boston, described it as an unlikely pairing. She's quoted on the office's website that it's exciting to think about how both sides can work together on social issues where there is common ground.
