Police Bust Drug Ring Tied to DVD Thefts

Samantha Hayes reporting A drug ring, supported by stolen DVD's, has been busted by several police agencies working together.

Detectives say the principals in this crime are from Bosnia. They stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and then turned around and sold it for drug money.

Police Bust Drug Ring Tied to DVD Thefts

When detectives knew who they were looking for, they set up surveillance at a West Valley City Pawn shop near 3930 Redwood Road.

When the suspects showed up to sell the stolen merchandise they were arrested.

The Maverick Store in Midvale is selling gas for $2.19, beer for $12.99. The DVD's? Well, two people decided those were free.

John Salazar: : "He found they had stolen at 686 East 7200 South Maverick store.. approximately 350 dvd's for $3600."

At thirty six hundred dollars, and the DVD shelf looking a little bare, the store manager noticed and called police.

Detectives showed the surveillance video to other police agencies, who then helped identify two of the suspects.

They were discovered at a West Valley City Pawn shop: A very frequent stop.

John Salazar: : "They have a total of 253 pawn shop visits with in the last 6 months..these 5 individuals."

Police say they are from Bosnia, and are using the money to buy drugs.

John Salazar: "They were talking about heroin and cocaine when they were under arrest here."

The two suspects arrested, Safet Kapic and Jasna Tursic, had warrants out for their arrest and had been pawning stolen DVD's for at least a year.

John Salazar: "..So they've been playing this game for a while."

Game's over for now.

Police are looking for three more suspects, but these recent arrests are good news for store managers.

John Salazar: "They are relieved and they moved the dvd displays close to cash registers and away from the doors."
