DUTCH JOHN — A boiling controversy in Daggett County over development in Dutch John took a sharp detour Thursday night.

Thursday afternoon, KSL News told viewers and readers about county contracts with two companies, including Keith Salmon & Sons, which this week has been laying a new sewer line. Most Dutch John residents signed petitions opposing what they called "a land giveaway" to Salmon and the other company.

Late Thursday night, Daggett County commissioners canceled three of the four contracts in question. Commissioners acknowledged they did not follow proper open-meeting procedures when they approved the contracts.

A county official said negotiations will continue with both companies to make the deals more palatable to Dutch John residents. He said they're urgently needed to jump-start economic development.
