NEW YORK - Who knew former Jazzman Kris Humphries was such a romantic?

Humphries surprised girlfriend of 6 months, Kim Kardashian, on bended knee on May 8. The surprise wasn't necessarily the red rose peddles spelling out "Will you marry me," or the mini-horses covered in sparkles at the family celebration. What Kardashian describes as "perfect" was the 20.5 caret gem Humphries helped create with jewelry designer Lorraine Schwarts.

Humphries, now a member of the New Jersey Nets, played for the Jazz from 2004-2006, averaging four points per game. Since joining the Nets in 2009, Humphries has had two of the best seasons of his career, starting more than half his games played with New Jersey.

Humphries commented during the time the ring was being created that all he knew was that, "I wanted it to be big." He consulted his parents' advice during the decision making, but Humphries never lost confidence while designing the ring with Schwarts. "I knew she'd love it - she better!"

The couple has been dating six months. No wedding date has been announced.
